Gene Luen Yang Author Event!

April 13, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Little Shop favorite (and former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature) Gene Luen Yang is coming to Decatur to celebrate the newest graphic novel in his Secret Coders series: Potions and Parameters! In addition to being one of the best graphic novelists ever, Yang has created a program called “Reading Without Walls,” which calls us all to explore books about characters who look or live differently than us, topics we haven’t discovered, or formats that we haven’t tried. In what we think is the PERFECT marriage of “Secret Coders” and “Reading Without Walls,” we are hosting a contest leading up to the event in partnership with Decatur Makers! We challenge YOU (and a team of your choosing) to create a simple machine from found objects that will break down a wall made of Legos! We will put the machines on display before the event beginning at 6:30, ask audience members to vote, and the winning team will win fabulous prizes from Little Shop and Decatur Makers. The Decatur Makers space will be open for teams on the following dates:

March 28 for Family Build Night between 5:00 and 7:00
April 1 for Girls Maker Club between 3:00 and 5:00
April 11 for Open Build Night between 7:00 and 9:00

Let’s build some cool machines, break down some reading walls, and celebrate Gene Luen Yang!

This event is FREE and open to the public. You must purchase a copy of Secret Coders: Potions and Parameters from us in order to earn a place in the signing line. The machine demonstrations will begin at 6:30, and the author event will begin at 7:00.
