The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year in late winter/ early spring. It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the book of Esther. To celebrate, we have a festive dinner, give gifts of food to friends, monetary gifts to the needy, and read the story of the miracle. The miracle of Purim came about in a mysterious, hidden manner (Queen Esther was able to save the Jewish nation because she kept her faith and nationality a secret until exactly the right moment). Because of this, it is customary to “hide” your identity on Purim by dressing up in your favorite costume!
