May
Catch-All Book Group (everybody else)
Monday, May 7th | 7:00 p.m.
We’re reading City of Thieves this month, and hopefully it won’t be as depressing as our last couple of books! But it might be…it’s the story of two prisoners who are forced to complete a seemingly simple but impossible task during wartime.
Not So YA Book Club (adult readers of young adult books)
Saturday, May 12th | 7 p.m.
Are you an adult who can’t stay away from the YA shelves? Did you obsess over Katniss’ love triangle, cry at Ender’s situation, or swoon when Anna finally got her French kiss? If you’re more interested in books about kids half your age, then you’ve found the right book club! This is a new book club that Miss Kim and her posse are starting and you’re invited to join! This month, they’ll be reading The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness, a dystopian tale where everyone can hear each other’s thoughts. The group will meet here at the shop and then go to a local pub for discussion and drinks. (Ah, one of the perks of being older than 21.)
Page Turners (6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls)
Thursday, May 17th | 4:15 p.m.
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is one of our favorite books here at Little Shop. It’s the story of an everyday girl living in New York City who starts receiving mysterious letters from someone who seems to know all about her...and the future! And if you haven’t read A Wrinkle in Time, now would be a good time to do so, since so much of this book is based on that classic!
Kids and Companions (kids age 8-11 and any adult of their choice)
Friday, May 18th | 6 p.m.
Get ready for a non-stop historical adventure with The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg by Rodman Philbrick! When twelve-year-old Homer runs away to find his brother who has been sold into the Union Army, he meets a cast of colorful Civil-War era scallywags on his journey South.
Guys Who Read (guys who read)
Thursday, May 24th | 7 p.m.
This month the Guys are reading Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America, by John M. Barry. As usual, the Guys will be meeting at the shop at 7 and then heading over to MacMcGee to drink and discuss.
