holiday 2018 events

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and here’s what we have in store for you as we step into the holiday season!Please note some events require pre-registration and a fee to participate. Event sign ups begin at 10am on Thursday, November 15th.

Chanukah Storytime

Sunday, November 18th  – 2 pm

Join Chabad of Decatur at Little Shop of Stories as we get into the holiday spirit with Chanukah Storytime! We’ll be reading the story of the Maccabbees from a giant, 2 foot long book, and singing about our favorite traditions. Stop by to join in the fun and get some free Chanukah goodies!

Registration is not required.

Annual Ornament Workshop with special guest Tony DiTerlizzi!

Sunday, December 2nd  – 1 pm

It’s our Annual Ornament Workshop with special guest Tony DiTerlizzi, creator of The Broken Ornament, a new holiday classic!  From 1-2pm, join us to make ornaments for gift-giving followed by our visit with Tony.  We’ll have snacks on hand and lots of good cheer.  Please note: there is a $5 registration fee to participate in the workshop portion of this event and space is limited.  Tony’s presentation is free.  A purchase of The Broken Ornament is required to enter the signing line.

Annual Christmas Tree Lighting!

Thursday, December 6th  – 7 pm

It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

This year the event will take on the Square’s plaza. There’s a new tree!

We’ll still have the choir from the 4/5 Academy at 5th Avenue, snow machines, and a countdown to the lighting with Santa.

Registration is not required. Just join thousands of your neighbors and help to make your season bright!

Gingerbread Storytime and Decorating!

Saturday, December 8th  – 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm

Run, run as fast as you can!  We are reading sweet and delicious stories about gingerbread boys and girls followed by cookie decorating.  Please note: there is a $5 registration fee for this event and space is limited.

Registration required.

Hanukkah Storytime!

Sunday, December 9th – 2 pm

Local author Laurel Snyder will be our guest reader for this year’s Hanukkah storytime! Whether you celebrate the holiday yourself or just want to learn more, this is a storytime designed for ALL children.

Registration required. Event sign ups begin at 10am on Thursday, November 15th.

There is no fee for this event.


Storytime with the Grinch!

Thursday, December 13th  – 7 pm

Everyone’s favorite Christmas curmudgeon is coming to town-let’s hope his heart grows 3 sizes that day!

Registration is not required.




Polar Express Storytime and Visit with Santa Claus!

Saturday, December 15th  – 11 am and 1 pm

All Aboard The Polar Express!  While sipping hot chocolate, we’ll read the holiday classic about a young boy who learns the spirit of the season on a fantastical journey to the North Pole.  We’ll follow it up with a visit from the one and only man in the red suit!

Registration required.

$5 fee per child.


Mother Bruce Storytime and Visit!

Saturday, December 22nd  – 3 pm

Everyone’s second favorite Christmas curmudgeon is at the shop with his newest tale Santa Bruce– when Mother Bruce faces another case of mistaken identity will he be able to grant everyone’s holiday wishes?  Will he even want to?

Registration is not required.




The Night Before the Night Before Christmas

Sunday, December 23rd – 1 pm and 3 pm

Come meet SANTA and hear him read The Night Before Christmas! We know it’s the night BEFORE the night before…but it’s just as magical.

Registration required.
