Law Camp
June 23 - 27
Ages: 10 and up

The goal is to introduce students to the logic, the beauty, and the complexity of the law.  Students will gain experience by reading cases and speaking before others on serious topics.  It is the hope that students will become smarter readers, smarter arguers, and smarter about making decisions – both the big ones and the small ones that they face during their daily lives.

We’ll be covering issues big and small as well.  From Constitutional law to the ability of a 16 year-old to obtain a credit card; from juveniles being tried as adults to the right of a high school student to wear a kilt to school.

A trip to the courthouse is planned, as well as a mock trial.  Perhaps most important, there will be no homework!

Students who complete Law Camp are not eligible to take the Georgia bar exam or become a practicing attorney.  However, our total tuition is approximately $114,303 less than that other area law school.

Dave Shallenberger practiced law for way too many years, then lost his mind and opened a children’s bookstore with Diane.  During lucid intervals, Dave taught the undergraduate business law course at Georgia Tech’s College of Management for seven years.

Goody for Girls! Camp
June 30 - July 2
Ages: 7 - 9

Isn’t it great to be a girl?  This week’s camp is  special ‘cause it’s a 3 day camp and we are celebrating  all the things girls can do and be!  Based on the new book, For Girls Only by Laura Dower, this camp will include fun, challenging, and inspiring activities to bring out the best in Your Girl.  Limited to 18 girls.

Comics Camp
July 14 - 18
Ages: 9 - 12

Do you like graphic novels, comic books, and comic strips?  Come to Comics Camp, where we’ll discover the art of cartooning, including character design, storytelling with words and pictures, perspective, panels, word balloons, inking, and more!  Mystery guests included!  Expect to draw.  A lot.  Limited to 15 campers.

Chess Camp
July 21 - 25

Skill level:   Campers must be able to set up chess board, know how each piece moves, know how to checkmate, and have a desire to improve.

Chess Camp has been a huge hit the last three years.  Coach Martin is returning to teach, again assisted by his trusty sidekick, Quinn.  Students will learn strategies to improve all facets of their games.  Many times a novice player will gain an advantage on an opponent, but is unable to checkmate.  As such, this summer’s focus will be on the endgame.

Lew Martin has been instrumental in the development of elementary school chess in DeKalb County during the past decade, implementing chess programs and inaugurating tournaments.  Teams coached by Lew have won 13 regional titles and honors, four state championships, and one national title (Fernbank - 2002).  Lew served as coach for four different elementary school chess programs during the past academic year.

Quinn Shallenberger, who will be entering his senior year at Druid Hills High School, was on teams that won two state chess championships in elementary school (including Fernbank’s 2002 National Chess Championship team) and two in middle school. His current USCF rating is 1441.

Drama Camp
July 28 - August 1
Rising 2nd graders – 8 year olds

Calling all Drama Kings and Queens!  Join us for a week of theatrical fun and games with Miss Lyndsey, Little Shop’s resident director/producer/actress.  Our week will culminate in a piece written, directed, produced, and performed by our campers.  Limited to 15 actors/actresses.

Hours

Each camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Law Camp, which is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost

Each camp is $250 except Chess Camp ($225), Law Camp ($225), and Goody For Girls! Camp ($150).
