Diane
She loves kids and she loves books. So it kinda makes sense that she’d love kids’ books too. This is her dream come true! But please don’t ever refer to her as “that girl from You’ve Got Mail.” She’d much prefer feisty little bookstore babe. And say it like you mean it, please. Diane originates from Long Island, but don’t hold that against her. When not reading books for free in local bookstores, she spent her childhood summers stealing magazines from the local library. Don’t tell her mom.
Fave book as a kid: Little House series ‘cause in another life she was definitely a little girl on the prairie. Yes, we know that’s hard to believe since she’s such a diva now.
Fave kid’s book as a big kid: Skippyjon Jones or Kitten’s First Full Moon or Bark, George or Julius, Baby of the World…
Dave
Dave was born in 1895 and raised in a suburb of Peru, Nebraska, where he attended Peru State College and majored in International Finance. All of which goes to explain how he came to become the co-owner of a children's bookstore in Decatur, Georgia.
Fave book as a kid: White Fang by Jack London because it was the first book he’d read that “treated me like an adult.”
Fave book as a college kid: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. This is a book people either really love or really, really hate. This exposed me to new ideas - such as metaphysics - and started to open my mind in different directions.
Fave kid’s book as a big kid: Dinosaur Bob and His Adventures with the Family Lazardo by William Joyce. Dinosaurs, travel, baseball, family; it's got it all.
Terra
Our lovely store manager and Alphabetizing Czar, Terra was a big wig editorial assistant at Scholastic in NYC but now rocks our world in the ATL. She likes Fig Newtons, libraries, and white roses but don’t ever give her a Marshmallow Peep or her true colors will show.
Fave book as a kid: Kabumpo in Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson, with Peter Pan and Wendy a close second.
Fave Kids’ Book as a Big Kid: Scarecrow and His Servant, because it reminds her of Kabumpo.
Al
Al Kaufman is a frustrated writer and pretty good reader. His favorite books as a kid were The Monster at the End of this Book (to which he can still do a great Grover imitation) and Where the Wild Things Are (which he still has memorized). His favorite kid's book now is Roddy Doyle's The Giggler Treatment (which just makes him laugh).
Matt
Matt hails from the small town of Ames, Iowa. Where the winters are cold and the girls are purty (don't try to make a connection on that one). Matt attended Iowa State the old "cardinal and gold" (looks like "red and yellow") and graduated with a degree in Education. He is currently a second grade teacher at Benteen Elementary School.
Favorite books for Matt include: The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs by Giles Andreae, and The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.
Rick
Rick comes to us from the Pacific Northwest by way of Avondale. We can’t really figure out what he has spent his life doing but trust us when we say he has done it all and knows just about everything you could possibly need to know about it. Plus he does a great monster voice. His grandsons' names are Coltrane and Eero- does it get any cooler than that?
Rick’s fave kid book: Bark George by Jules Feiffer
or The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander
Lyndsey
Lyndsey, an ASC student destined for the lights of Broadway, she spent her days as a child wanting to grow up to be a Disney Princess, eating star fruit, and listening to Cher, Bette Midler, and Barbara Streisand. She is much too normal for our liking, and we are working on that.
Lyndsey’s fave kid book: The Babysitter’s Club series
Cal
Cal was born and raised. Currently a sophomore at Druid Hills High School, he's into rock climbing. We love having him here.
Cal's favorite book ever is Piggie Pie! by Margie Palatini.
Justin
Justin was
Born on a Monday,
Christened on Tuesday,
Married on Wednesday,
Took ill on Thursday,
Read a book on Friday,
Got better on Saturday,
Worked at Little Shop on Sunday.
And better off than Solomon Grundy.
Krista
After graduating from UGA, getting married and traveling around the country, Krista ended up in Decatur and magically stumbled upon Little Shop where she’s putting her English minor to good work while forgetting the other subjects she studied. She always carries a book, water bottle and sweater with her wherever she goes and she’s currently trying (somewhat unsuccessfully) not to become a crazy obsessed dog person. Her puppy, Bear, is making that difficult.
Favorite children’s books as a kid: Chester’s Way, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Nancy Drew, A Little Princess.
Favorite children’s books these days: The Sea Serpent and Me, The Golden Compass, Love That Dog, My Most Excellent Year, Ladybug Girl and Harry Potter (still)
